Soft Resetting (abbreviated to SR) is pressing certain buttons on your console to reload the game from the startup screen. This is different from a hard reset, which is restarting the game by powering down the system and then turning it back on again.
Wit the DS games, press and hold L, R, Start, and Select.
Each time you encounter a Pokemon, it has a 1/8192 chance of being shiny, but that doesn't mean you have to SR 8000 times! It's all random and it can happen any time. Soft resetting is primarily used for in-game event Pokemon; such as Drifloon, Rotom, Giratina, where the Pokemon appear as sprites that you can approach and engage. You can also SR for shiny starters!
Be sure to save the game beforehand before you start SR'ing!
I think I should mention it's impossible to SR for the Pokemon that appear as sprites in Gen V games (Victini, Zekrom, Reshiram, etc).
ANYWAY. Anyone SR'ing for a shiny?
I'm stuck in Platinum SR'ing for a shiny Giratina in the Reverse World. I've only SR like.. ten times so far, so I'm not making much progress with that. P: I also tried to SR for a shiny Drifloon at the Windworks. I reset over 200-300+? times (I don't know the exact number, I lost the index card where I was keeping track).

Oh goodness. xD I tried to Soft Reset to get a Shiny Suicune but after 15,000+ resets, (15,632) Yeah, I kept track because I was meaning to make a sort of guide or what ever. But yeah. After all those SRes I still had no luck so I just gave up. Unfortunately, but fortunately I guess, I still have Heart Gold in which I plan to do the same thing, hopefully with better results. And even more unfortunately, it was once I gave up, about a week later, did Nintendo announce the Shiny beasts from the movies. So... idk, maybe I'mm try for a Shiny Lugia and Ho-Oh too with my HeartGold. Good luck with getting that Shiny Giratina, though.

woww, how unlucky. I've seen people that have encountered shinies in under 300 resets.
Good luck trying again. (:
